Elections affect every area of our lives, from healthcare to jobs to racial justice. When we choose our leaders by voting, we’re choosing the people who will make decisions that shape the direction of our country and our communities. There are several types of elections in which voters participate, including but not limited to:  

Primary Election:  Every 2 years, always in an even year. These elections may include federal, state, county, and local offices. This election serves to narrow down each recognized political party's candidates. 
General Election: Every 2 years, always in an even year. This is the final election and may include federal, state, county, and local offices.

Presidential Preference Election (PPE):  An election in which voters choose who they would like to be their presidential candidate in the upcoming General Election. Only voters registered with the participating parties can vote in this election. Party winners of the Arizona PPE are officially determined at the party’s national convention.

Midterm Election:  Every 2 years, one third of the U.S. Senate’s members are either elected (or re-elected) or vacate the seat at the end of the term. When this biennial contest does not coincide with a presidential election, it is called a “midterm election.”
